An interesting case of two mothers came into light when Manjit Kaur, a mother of two sons, paid Rs 10,000 to a Ludhiana-based woman who gave birth to a girl child to make sure that the parents of the infant don’t kill her. In order to save the girl Manjit took the baby to her home in Himmat Singh Nagar of Punjab because the parents never wanted to keep her alive. The girl, who was born on July 18, 2009, was named Harjapji. Sukhwinder Singh, husband of Manjit, and now also foster father of Harjapji, is an employee in a hosiery factory. He said, “With a small income and already having two sons, it was not possible for us to bring up third child but when we came to know that the neighbourhood family had planned to throw their infant, we offered them to adopt the baby.” The couple narrated their story at Lohri Mela organised by Malwa Sabhacharak Manch and they were even honoured for this great cause. Sukhwinder said, “Manjit always wanted to have a girl but God blessed us two sons, so we never wanted to lose this chance to adopt her. However we were stunned when the family demanded Rs 25,000 from us as hospital expenses. I did not have so much of money and finally they negotiated for 10,000.”
