“If reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) are implemented at Jamia Millia Islamia, the institute would not be able to function as a minority institution,” said former Jamia Teachers’ Association President Dr. N.U. Khan, on May 20. “While OBC reservations constitute 27 per cent, reservations for the SCs and the STs are 22.5 per cent. The 50 per cent seats meant for the general category cannot be disturbed. In such scenario, how will students from our community get admission?” Khan asked at a press conference. While Jamia has already implemented SC/ST reservations, it has not implemented OBC reservations yet. “It is like a sword hanging above us,” said Dr. Khan. He demanded from the Government to declare Jamia a minority educational institution under Article 30(1) of the Constitution and at least 50 per cent in all courses of Jamia should be reserved for students belonging to the Muslim community.
