The unprovoked, inhuman and murderous attack by Israeli naval commandos on humanitarian aid flotilla taking life saving relief materials to the 15 lakh besieged Palestinians of Gaza has outraged the conscience of humanity and the whole world has condemned it in no uncertain terms. The aid flotilla with ships from Turkey, Greece, Ireland, Cyprus and Sweeden was taking 10,000 tons of food and medicines badly needed by the suffering Gazans.
This attack on 700 odd unarmed activists from over 20 countries which included human rights activists, journalists, writers, social workers, parliamentarians from European countries and even one Nobel Laureate, shows the basic violent nature of Zionist State which was conceived in violence and nurtured on unending brutality.
The Freedom Flotilla was organised by ‘Free Gaza Movement’ and was aimed at raising awareness of illegal siege of Gaza by Israel against all civilised norms and international law.
Fifteen lakh Gazans are under atrocious siege and have been condemned to suffer in an open air jail since June 2007 when Hamas came to power. The blockade was further tightened after December 2008 Israeli attack on Gaza which killed around 1400 Palestinians including hundreds of women and children. This blockade confines imports of essential commodities to limited supplies which are barely enough for the besieged people. The United Nations called it the collective punishment of Palestinians. According to UN statistics more than 70% Gazans live in abject poverty without any job or work; 75% relying on doled food and 60% without daily access to water. The conditions there are more inhuman than in Nazi Concentration Camps.
In this background Free Gaza Movement – a Cyprus-bases human rights group organised the flotilla with the help of the conscience keepers of the whole world to break the blockade.
In spite of worldwide outrage and condemnation Israeli is not ready to make any amends. Benjamin Netanyahu brazenly justified the attack while the Israeli military chief supported it.
US President Obama, who is under the continuous pressure of Israeli lobby, is not expected to condemn it in clear words. It is a fact that Israel has been working at the behest of US and functioning as the agent of US hegemony in the Middle East. Therefore the world cannot expect any concrete action from the US administration.
It is time the countries of the world unite and pressurise the UN to impose a general boycott of the terrorist state. India also should rethink its growing military and economic relations with Israel and support a boycott. If the countries of the world do not unite against Israeli atrocities Israel will feel emboldened to continue the reign of terror.
The world history tells that all atrocities have to stop at a certain level. It appears that Israel has reached that point.
