LIBYAN MUSLIM LEADERS URGE SECURITY FORCES TO STOP KILLING CIVILIANS

“This is an urgent appeal from religious scholars, intellectuals, and elders from Tripoli, Bani Walid, Zintan, Jadu, Msalata, Misrata, Zawiah, and other towns and villages of the western area,” the appeal, signed by the group of leaders, stated. “We appeal to every Muslim, within the regime or assisting it in any way, to recognise that the killing of innocent human beings is forbidden by our Creator and by His beloved prophet of compassion, peace be to him... REGIME WILL NOT BE REFORMED FROM WITHIN THE REGIME: ELBARADEI

Egyptian online democracy activists are calling for a demonstration on February 22 to demand the removal of the country’s interim government, saying it contains too many old faces. The “Tuesday of Challenge” march aims to rally a million followers to keep up pressure on the army-led administration, in an echo of the massive demonstrations that forced President Hosni Mubarak to step down on February 11. “Our slogan from day one has been ‘The people want the over... LIBYAN CLASHES HITS STOCKS AS OIL PRICES SURGE

Fears that Libya is heading toward deepening chaos hit stocks on February 21 and pushed oil prices sharply higher. With reports suggesting that over 300 people have been killed in clashes across the country, which have spread to the capital Tripoli, investors are getting increasingly worried about the escalating violence in one of Africa’s biggest oil producers. Those concerns were heightened by a statement from Seif Al-Islam Qaddafi, the son of Libya’s longtime leader Moammar Qad... More

The president’s domestic assets were frozen soon after he stepped down, they added. The freeze applies to Mubarak, his wife, his two sons and two daughters-in-law, said the officials. The announcement c... More

PHILIPPINES HALTS DEPLOYMENT OF WORKERS TO LIBYA

Officials say the Philippine government, one of the world’s biggest labour exporters, has indefinitely deferred the deployment of workers to restive Libya, Bahrain and Yemen. Philippine Overseas Employment Administration chief Carlos Cao on February 22 said that officials also decided in an emergency meeting to prepare for a possible evacuation of Filipino workers, especially in violence-prone regions of Libya like Benghazi city, if the unrest there worsens. Foreign affairs department s... More

ISRAEL ISOLATED AND UNDER THREAT

The regional deck has been reshuffled and is no longer in Israel’s favour, causing serious consternation in Tel Aviv. A country that was considered all-powerful a mere month ago now finds itself out in the cold for a variety of reasons at a time when it is governed by, arguably, the most intransigent and short-sighted prime minister in its history; a man who puts right-wing ideology before real politic. In the first place, Israel has lost the unconditional support of ... More
