The Andhra Pradesh government has finally agreed to release the compensation for the innocent Muslim youths picked up by the police as suspects in a knee-jerk reaction to the blast. There are a total of 70 Muslim youths who were acquitted by the trial courts, but unfortunately the acquittal happened only when most of them had spent six to eighteen months in jail. The AP Minorities Commission, which had probed the allegations of illegal torture and arrests, had slammed the police for wrongly implicating the youths and sought compensation in Dec 2008. Under sharp criticism from the opposition, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy announced that compensation be paid by Friday. Twenty youths who suffered torture and were imprisoned for more than a year will receive Rs 3 lakh each while others will receive amounts ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000.
