It is the height of irony that US President Barack Obama recently compared himself with the likes of M.K. Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, who are widely acknowledged as symbols of peace and goodwill. Pitted against these awe-inspiring apostles of peace, Obama cuts a very sorry figure indeed.

The current budget is no visionary budget: it’s shaped by political exigencies. The Budget once again has not put forth enough initiatives for the economic development of the common man. Perversely, it has shown thumbs down to the big expectations of aam admi. Comparing to fast accelerating inflation rate, the enhancement in basic exemption limit merely by Rs 20000 is as good as a piece of toffee to a weeping child.

UP Chief Minister designate, even before taking oath on Mar 15, rightly ordered immediate removal of congratulatory hoardings emerged overnight on his sweeping polls to state-assembly. It has become a dirty fashion to waste money by putting posters and hoardings to flatter politicians not only on their winning elections, but also on their birthdays. There should be some legislation to prevent such wastage of money on such unproductive items which also deface walls.
