'Subversion and Manipulation' in Gujarat Elections

Editorial

Since the genocide of Muslims in Gujarat, meticulously planned by Hindutva extremists and diabolically abetted by some sections of state machineries, in 2002, civil and human rights activists, national as well as international, have raised their respective voices against this inhuman and inhumane killings of men and women, young and old, even unborn foetuses. Fact-finding teams and media reports, including a Tehelka sting operation, have brought to light the graphic details of the killings of Muslims and destruction of their properties and business enterprises and the role of Hindutvawadis therein. The Union Government should have sacked the state government then and there but thanks to the Machiavellian interests of political parties, including Congress, the governments at the Centre, one after another, have been providing the riot-mongers with a new lease to rule the roost. This has sent a disquieting message to concerned citizens as well as human rights activists against the UPA government at the Centre.

Shabnam Hashmi, who has been a renowned activist for about three decades, founded ANHAD (Act Now for Harmony and Democracy) in the wake of the Gujarat genocide 2002. During the recent Assembly elections in the state she along with her entire team of social activists had been camping in Gujarat to ensure that the “communal-fascist regime” of Narendra Modi does not come to power once again. But to her utter chagrin, Modi-led BJP once again got ‘victory’ though with fewer seats and lesser vote margins debunking the development plank of Modi.

Within a week of the declaration of Gujarat assembly election results, Hashmi quit all five government panels, including Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), and Assessment and Monitoring Authority of Planning Commission (AMAPC) in protest against what she dubbed Congress “connivance” to ensure Modi’s victory in the elections and the “betrayal” of the aspirations of the marginalised people of Gujarat to throw out the Modi regime. Hashmi does not “know how it happened” but alleges there was “subversion and manipulation” in the entire game and “some part of it was done by the party leading the UPA”.

Hashmi’s move is a smart slap on the face of Congress leaders who have been playing what is now known as “soft Hindutva” most brazenly and have failed to call a spade a spade vis-à-vis Hindutva terrorism in the country. If this grand old party still wants to restore its lost ground in the State as well as in various other states, it needs to take up the cudgel and fight against anti-national elements in the country tooth and nail. However, this is high time the practitioners of value-based politics came together with Hashmi and her team to reject the results of Gujarat elections and devised the joint course of action.
