TURKISH EX-ARMY CHIEF ARRESTED OVER 1997 COUP AGAINST ERBAKAN GOVT

Muslim World

Turkey’s former military chief Ismail Hakki Karadayi was detained on 4 January for questioning over his role in the ousting of a pro-Islamic government in the 1990s. He was being taken to the capital, Ankara, to answer questions over his role in forcing the resignation in 1997 of former PM Necmettin Erbakan. Six retired generals, including the country’s former chiefs of air force and land forces, were charged in May over Erbakan’s ouster. The military pressured Erbakan to resign over his alleged attempts to raise the profile of Islam in the predominantly Muslim but secular country.
