Saffron ‘Terror Training’ Camps Will Home Minister Act Fast?

The remark made by Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde at the Congress Chintan Shivir at Jaipur on 20 January, accusing the RSS and BJP of conducting ‘terror training’ camps to spread saffron terrorism in the country, is no news. Keen observers of our society have known this fact years rather decades earlier. What is the news of vital importance is that Hindutva extremists planned to target former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajinder Sachar in October 2006. This diabolic plan was revealed to the NIA by the alleged Samjhauta Express train bomber Rajendra Choudhary. Had the likes of Choudhary succeeded in their plan, Justice Sachar, like Mahatma Gandhi, would have gone down in history by now. But thanks to the tight security in Delhi then in 2006, this living light of justice could be saved and is still among us.

Where was the Congress when its senior leader Digvijay Singh made such accusations several times earlier? And where were the Congress leaders when government officers brought with them two large steel trunks full of plans of attacks to be made by Hindutva fanatics?

Rajeshwar Dayal, ICS and former Home Secretary of UP, in his book A Life of Our Times (Orient Longman, 1998), reveals an incident of pre-Independence days when he writes: “I must record an episode of a very grave nature. When communal tension was still at fever pitch, the Deputy Inspector General of Police Western Range, a very seasoned and capable officer, B.B.L. Jaitley arrived at my house in secrecy. He was accompanied by two of his officers who brought with them two large steel trunks securely locked. When the trunks were opened, they revealed incontrovertible evidence of a dastardly conspiracy to create a communal holocaust throughout the western districts of the province.”

Dayal took the incriminating evidence to the Chief Minister Gobind Ballabh Pant. “There, in a closed room, Jaitley gave a full report of his discovery backed by all the evidence contained in the steel trunks. Timely raids conducted on the premises of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh) had brought the massive conspiracy to light…. Both Jaitley and myself pressed for the immediate arrest of the prime accused Shri Golwalkar, who was still in the area.”

Pant decided to put the matter before his cabinet. But thanks to the presence of RSS sympathisers in the Congress rank and file, the matter was hushed up. And the Congress has been very much tolerant towards Hindutva terrorism ever since. Now when the Union Home Minister has declared this fact, the Government ought to read the writ on the wall, realise this mistake, and act fast.
