COMPENSATION DEMANDED FOR INNOCENT MUSLIMS FRAMED UNDER TERROR CHARGES

Inside India

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat and party’s senior leader Subhashini Ali, on 31 January, met Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, in Lucknow and requested him to provide compensation and ensure rehabilitation of the Muslim youths who were implicated in terror charges and subsequently acquitted by various courts of law in the state. Karat also handed over a list of 9 such youths— Wasif Haider, Shafat Rasool, Mumtaz Ahmad, Gulam Jeelani, Mohammad Jubair, Abdul Mubin, Bilal Ahmad, Gulzar Ahmad and Haji Atik. They all remained in jail for nearly eight years before being acquitted by courts in absence of any evidence against them. Karat also requested the Chief Minister to prosecute the police officers who had implicated them. Karat later said that a point of great concern is that ‘the real culprits’ are still out of reach. The Chief Minister assured the leaders that he would take the issue seriously.
