SHARI’AH ESSENCE DISCUSSED IN JAIPUR LITERARY FESTIVAL

Inside India

Jaipur Literary Festival, this year, organised a full session to discuss “Heaven on earth: On Shari’ah law.” London-based human rights lawyer, Sadakat Qadri, noted Islamic scholar, Asghar Ali Engineer, authors Tom Holland and Reza Aslam and journalist Mary Harper took part in the session and discussed the inner essence of Shari’ah. They analysed history, sociology and faith behind the set of rules and regulations governing the lives of Muslims. The hour-long dialogue, sought to search the history of Shari’ah in theory and practice, concluded with the affirmation that Islam as it is being practised now cannot represent original sprit of the religion. The speakers, however, agreed that misconceptions about Shari’ah must be removed through correct interpretation in keeping with the requirements of modern society.
