UN RIGHTS GROUP REFERS TORTURE OF BJI LEADERS TO SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR

Muslim World

UN Human Rights Group has referred the cases of Prof. Ghulam Azam and two others to the Special Rapporteur on torture for appropriate action. The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations Human Rights Council determined that the deprivation of liberty of Prof. Ghulam Azam, Mr. Azharul Islam and Mr. Mir Quashem Ali as arbitrary and constitutes a breach of Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 9 of International Charter on Civil and Political Rights. The Working Group further stated that it, ‘considers it appropriate to refer the allegations of torture and cruel, inhuman treatment to the Special Rapporteur for appropriate action’.

In their statement issued on 16 January Working Party on Arbitrary Detention of the UN Human Rights Group released the decision taken in its 65th session (No. 66/2012) held between 14 to 23 November 2012. The Working Group says that it has transmitted the allegations to the government of Bangladesh on 14 September 2012 but regrets that it failed to respond to them.

The working group further urged the Bangladesh government, ‘to take necessary steps to remedy the situation by re-considering their bail application and bring it into conformity with the standards and principles set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant of Civil and Religious Rights.’
