Pope’s Resignation and Controversies that Followed

Report

By OUR STAFF WRITER

Pope Benedict announced his resignation on 11 February, citing his deteriorating physical and mental health, making him unable to perform what he is required to. However as soon as he announced his resignation, came the deluge of controversies and claims that the Pope did so under pressure and he was physically and mentally capable of performing all the tasks that he was required to do at the taxing post. It also became shocking for some because this was the first time in the history that the Pope resigned from the post.

All the controversy stems from the report prepared by three cardinals namely, Julian Herranz, Josef Tomko and Salvatore De Giorgi. The Pope asked the three to prepare a report to investigate the “Vatileaks” scandal and the findings say that there is an “inappropriate influence” of the gay lobby within the Holy See. It is speculated that the Pope made firm his decision to resign from the post when the 300-page report was submitted to him in December last.

The report mainly focused the breach of the sixth and seventh commandment which says: “Thou shalt not commit adultery” and “Thou shalt not steal.” It has been reported in the Italian daily that “Everything revolves around the non-observance of the sixth and seventh commandments.” The Cardinals unearthed the underground gay network, whose members organise sexual meetings in Rome and Vatican City. The report further claims that the group or the “gay lobby” was subject of blackmail attempts and try to exert “external influence” from outside from those who have “worldly nature.”

This gross violation of the commandments might have compelled the Pope to resign as he may have been finding it difficult to take strong actions against those involved in the violation of the commandments. Some often claim that the strong gay lobby even possesses the power to blackmail the Pope to resign and hence he resigned under pressure and not the physical and mental deterioration in his health as he is claiming.

Now the eyes are set on as to who will be the next Pope to whom Pope Benedict would hand over the confidential reports so that he would take the necessary and the strong actions which are required. Will the new Pope be immune from the blackmailing by the groups inclined towards “worldly nature” is a matter that time will tell.
