B’desh Jamaat-e-Islami Asks Media to Refrain from Publishing False Reports
AL, Chatra League, Jubo League members vandalise temples

Cover Story

The executive committee member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Mr. Hamidur Rahman Azad, in a statement on 6 March, condemned the media reports accusing Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir of committing vandalism against the minority community. He said in fact the members of Awami League, Chatra League and Jubo League have been found, and some of them arrested as well, for vandalising temples and other places.

“I strongly condemn these reports that falsely accused Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir of these terrible crimes. We have repeatedly condemned these attacks and have very clearly stated that we are not involved in such attacks. We will again declare that we were not in any manner involved in the attacks against members of the minority communities,” said Mr. Azad.

He further said, “However, evidence has come to light showing involvement of Awami League members in attacking Hindu temples and houses. The government is intentionally trying to distract the attention of the world media from the genocide perpetrated on members of the Opposition political parties. Aided by some newspapers and media, the government is carrying out a massive smear campaign against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir.

“On 5 March, a Jubo League leader, Tabibur Rahman Tipu was caught vandalising a local Shaheed Minar and arrested. Yesterday (5 March), in Babuganj Sub district in Barisal, Chatra League members attacked and vandalised a Hindu owned shop and they also beat up the owner inside a temple. This news has been reported by newspapers.

“Furthermore, yesterday, Awami League members openly patrolled the streets in Comilla with firearms, photographs of which can be seen in newspapers today (6 March). This proves that the Awami League and its cohorts were in fact involved in the attacks on the Hindu houses and temples and were involved in vandalising Shaheed Minars.

“I urge the media to be more responsible and to refrain from publishing false reports.”
