Once Upon a Time

Editorial

The time is not far away, when the future historian may write about a country which was great ‘once upon a time’.

The American story is a story of a great nation and its achievements – its struggle to free itself from the shackles of British bondage, its stress on freedom and democracy, its ascendance as a unipolar power and the largest economy and its clout in world affairs.

But of late, America is writing itself off. Its moral degradation, its soaring rate of crimes, its crass materialism, its disintegration of family life, its proneness to violence and sexual anarchy, its exploitation of weaker nations, its utterly undemocratic moves in the name of promotion of democracy and its record of human rights violation in the whole world are home truths which need no explanation.

Add to this the fact that it has the largest military establishment and possesses the biggest stockpile of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons which it uses to intimidate other nations. It employs questionable methods of arms twisting to achieve its narrow national interest.

The consequences of American misadventures in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere have failed to produce sobering effect on its policies.

Its constant support to Israeli atrocities has estranged not only Arabs and Muslims but given it a bad name in the entire world.

Abu Gharib atrocities, drone assassinations and dark deeds in Guantanamo are adding stain after stain every day on its forehead, on this would-be ‘once upon a time’ great power.

The whole world is watching in horror its treatment of Guantanamo detainees who are held without charges. About a 100 of them have been on hunger strike up to death for over a month. Hundreds of others have been transferred to torture houses in other countries. This is a new type of outsourcing of torture and atrocities which this so-called democracy has brazenly adopted.

If America does not stop this devaluation of human values, it is bound to lose its primacy and prominence. Mere military power and economic clout never sustain a country however great it may be.
