HIJAB CASE NEEDS THOROUGH HEARING; HC

Inside India

The Gauhati High Court, on 22 April, admitted the writ petition filed by the mother of a four-year old Muslim girl, Bibi Fatima, who has been asked by the school authority to remove headscarf or alternatively stop coming to the school. Jayanta Kumar Goswami, counsel of the mother, said that Justice Hrishikesh Roy admitted the petition and said the case needed a thorough hearing. He further said it is one among others related to the unfairness against minorities. The case was listed for hearing after one week.

The mother, Ms. Alee Ahmed, approached the court on 8 April after the authorities of the Kristo Jyoti School, turning down her request to cover her ward’s head with a scarf, gave her 15-day time to remove the same or instead stop sending the baby to the school.
