Reinstate Elected President, Form National Unity Government: Egypt Solidarity Forum

Report

Egypt Solidarity Forum, New Delhi, in a statement issued on 8 July, expressed its grave concern over the Egypt military’s bid  to remove the first democratically elected civilian president of Egypt who was given full mandate by the people in a free and fair election. Condemning the military move, the forum considered the declaration as a ‘military coup’ at the behest of anti-revolution forces of Mubarak era who are still capturing state machinery in Egypt.

The forum said that the settlement of the crisis should have been only through respecting the legitimacy of the elected president and by forming a national unity government for which President Mohamed Morsi had already offered. But his offer was ignored by the military establishment to execute the preplanned coup. Those who fought hard for democracy and took part in the election, regardless of their choices, are feeling betrayed by this military coup.

The forum extended its support to Egyptian people’s struggle to restore the deposed president Mohamed Morsi immediately. It strongly condemned massacre of 45 peaceful protesters by army in Cairo and arbitrary arrest and torture of protesters.

Signatories to the statement include Abhiruchi, Omair Anas, Syed Raghib, Ziaullah (ESF), Durgesh (AISF), Misab (SIO), and activists of Forum for Students’ Democracy.
