My Crime is to Involve Myself with Islamic Movement: Mujahid

Cover Story

On hearing the death sentence against him on 18 July, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BJI) Secretary General and former minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid said that the judgment is hundred per cent injustice.

“I was not in Faridpur during war. I was not involved with any crime in 1971. My crime is to involve myself with Islamic Movement,” he said to the judge right from the dock after the verdict was read out.

He was not allowed to say anything more when he wanted to say something. The police took him quickly from the dock. International Crimes Tribunal -1 chairman Obaidul Hasan read the last part of the verdict. A large number of detective police, people from different agencies, journalists and the main supporters of Shabagh Ganajagaran Manch Nassir Uddin Yusuf Baschu and Muntasir Mamun were present in the tribunal. A large number of state’s lawyers were also present there. But none of the defence lawyers were present there because of the strike.

The sons of Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Ali Ahmed Tajdid, Ali Ahmed Tahkik and Ali Ahmed Mabrur were there in the tribunal. They looked at their father and the judge while writing the verdict. Mujahid looked down. They finished 38 pages of 209-page verdict by 1:45 pm. Mujahid was normal. Justice Obaidul Hasan read the last sentence. He ordered Mujahid death sentence. Thereupon Mujahid said this verdict is total injustice. Prosecution brought seven allegations against him.
