It is of course unfortunate that a lady, the controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen, has to suffer so much. But we must understand that it is her own making. Actually she seems to enjoy controversies and adventures surrounding her. She was aware of the consequences of her poisonous writings. Freedom of expression is not to hurt others but to make one’s stand clear.

The recent spate of violence in Kolkata is indeed condemnable. On no account has violence been permitted in Islam or any other ideology and it was incorrect of the Muslim minorities to indulge in it. Also, writers and artists should understand that freedom of expression does not entitle one to abuse the beliefs or personalities associated with the faith of others. M.F. West Bengal was already under serious problems due to Nandigram violence. Where was the necessity for the Centre to extend visa to the controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen to continue her stay in that State?
Even the anti-Muslim Western countries, which revel in sheltering such Islam-baiters, got rid of her to avoid unnecessary problems. But what is the big idea in permitting this woman to continue her stay here indefinitely?
